Discontinued Figurines
Bing & Grondahl Discontinued Figurines: All of the following figurines are FIRST QUALITY and in EXCELLENT condition. Sizes (in inches) may be the maximum dimension or may refer only to the height, even when the figurine is longer or wider than high. Others available; please inquire if you are looking for a particular item.
Figurine Numbers: In 1987, Bing and Grondahl (B&G) merged with Royal Copenhagen, the other leading Danish porcelain manufacturer. Shortly thereafter, all figurines in production were given NEW three digit model number, and the B&G trademark was replaced with the Royal Copenhagen trademark. All the figurines listed here were discontinued before 1988; therefore, they have the OLD numbers and were never assigned NEW numbers; and have the B&G Trademark.
Prices: Because ALL of the following figurines have been discontinued at least 20 years, they have no current MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price, or "List Price"). I have shown the 1984 MSRP (List Price) for figurines that were still in production in 1984; figurines discontinued BEFORE 1984 are listed as "1984=Disc". Figurines that are still in production (or were discontinued since 1990) are listed on a separate page (click on Current B&G Figurines). The MSRP for current figurines have increased in price and average of 270% since 1984, largely due to the falling value of the US dollar over the last 24 years, but also due to 24 years of accumulated inflation. If you multiply the 1984 MSRP by 270%, you will get a pretty good estimate of what they would sell for new if still in production. For example, B&G #1600 Boy with Mandolin had a 1984 MSRP of $320; if still in production, its current MSRP would be approximately $320 x 270% = $864. I sell this figurine today for $195.
Price Guide: An excellent book, Bing & Grondahl Figures (by Nick and Caroline Pope) was published in January, 2003 by Schiffer Books. It lists over 1000 figurines made by B&G, including those which are still in production with a Royal Copenhagen trademark. It is a large format, hard cover book containing 240 pages and approximately 800 color pictures. It has the most complete listing and the best price guide in print for Bing & Grondahl figurines. (As with any price guide, the prices shown reflect the opinions and experience of the authors; my prices may be higher or lower.) If you collect or sell Bing & Grondahl figurines, you should definitely have this book. Cover price is $49.95; I have it in stock for sale at $35.
Although the price guide is expressed in US Dollars, much of the price data was gathered in England and Europe, and most of it was gathered prior to 2003. An updated Price Guide would need to be at least 30% to 50% higher just to reflect the declining value of the US Dollar. For comparison, there are 33 B&G figurines that were in production in 1984 and that are still in production in 2008. These 33 figurines had a total 1984 MSRP of $5411; they have a total 2008 MSRP of $14650; and a total LOW book value of $2900: and a total HIGH book value of $5860. That means that, on average, the HIGH book value is only 40% of today's Retail Price; you need to muliply the HIGH book value by 2.5 to get a reasonable approximation of the 2008 MSRP.
Factory Seconds: ALL figurines listed on this page are First Quality. Bing & Grondahl also released some figurines that were marked as Second Quality (factory 2nds), indicated by a horizontal scratch through the three towers in the trademark.
