Overglaze Figurines
Overglaze figurines are decorated after the figurines has been glazed and fired, so the colors are applied on top of (over) the glaze. Since the pigments do not have to withstand the intense heat used to fire the glass-like glaze, much brighter colors can be used, much finer detail can be achieved, and most figurines are highlighted with gold. This same process was used by Meissen to produce figurines and dinnerware, and it is the same process used by Royal Copenhagento make it's prestigious Flora Danica dinner service. Royal Copenhagen and B&G are rightly famous for their underglaze decorated figurines (which are painted before they glazed), which represent a significant technical achievement and a major contribution to the potter's art, but it is with their overglaze techniques that they created many of their most spectacular and beautiful figurines.
Almost all overglaze figurines are now discontinued, and all of the following figurines have the old (pre-1987) figurine numbers. Unless otherwise specified below, all of these figurines are first quality and in mint condition. Sizes (in inches) are provided by Royal Copenhagen and B&G, and may refer only to the height even when they are longer or wider than they are high.
PHOTOS: If the Description of a figurine appears in Blue, you can click on Description to see a photo of the figurine. Otherwise, please ask if you would like to see a photo; I can usually email you a photo within a day or two.
ARTISTS: Many of these figurines were designed by artists (sculptors) who are collectable in their own right. In the list below, the artist initials are: AM = Arno Malinowksi; CM = Carl Martin-Hansen; CT = Christian Thomsen; GH = Gerhard Henning; HC = Holger Christensen; HH = Hans Hansen; HT = Hans Tegner; LB = Lotte Benter; 18C = 18th century design (artist unknown).
PRICES: In most cases where a figurine was still in production in 1981, My Price is near (and sometimes below) the 1981 wholesale price. These are ALL now discontinued, but a few were still listed in the 1988 Royal Copenhagen catalog, with Retail Prices in 1988 approximately 50% higher than 1981 prices. Retail Prices have approximately doubled since 1981 for most other Royal Copenhagen items that are still in production. For example, Shepherd Boy Whittling (RC #905) had a 1981 Retail Price (MSRP) of $475; if still in production, it would be approximately $950 today; my price is $235 (slightly below 1981 wholesale). Hans & Trine (RC #1783) was $1150 in 1981, would now be approximately $2300 if still in production; my price is $575. See additional examples (the Four Seasons) at the bottom of this page.

** Four Seasons: These figurines were originally modeled and produced by Royal Copenhagen in the 18th Century. They were reintroduced in the early 20th century, and were discontinued again in the 1980s. The 1981 MSRP (List Prices) for these figurines total $11,375 for the set; if still in production today, the List Price would be double that. My individual prices for the four figurines total $5800 (about half the 1981 price). I would sell the complete set of four for $4800.
