Zodiac Signs by Christel Marott
In the mid-80s Christel Marott created sculptures of the twelve astrological signs of the zodiac, supremely capturing the special characteristics of each sign. Twelve girls appear in Christel's inimitable, sensual style, cunningly combining innocence and decadence.
Christel Marott (1919-1992) was only seventeen when she made her debut as an illustrator of weekly magazines, and throughout her life she continued to draw illustrations for weeklies and fashion magazines. She signed her work Christel, and it became synonymous with alluring girls with long legs and a characteristic, vibrant sensuality. Christel's talent diversified; her designs for fashion, shoes, and theater decorations show the scope of her abilities. She moved to Rome in 1973, where she developed her interest in the art of sculpture. She studied at the academy of art in Rome, and went on to create a series of unique sculptures in ceramics.
These figurines were introduced by Royal Copenhagen in 2004 and are being produced in white bisque (unglazed) porcelain. They vary in height from approximately 7 inches high (Aquarius, reclining, 18 cm) to just over 10 inches high (standing figures, 26 cm).
