"Southern Landmarks" Series
A series of 16 plates, issued two per year from 1973 through 1980. Original paintings by John Alan Maxwell (1904-1984), born in Roanoke, Virginia and raised in Tennessee. An American artist known primarily for his book and magazine illustrations (including Collier's Magazine and The Saturday Evening Post) as well as historical paintings, usually nostalgic scenes from The Old south. The plates were produced by Gorham, distributed by The American Commemorative Council, and sponsored by the National Historical Society. First issue price in 1973 was $35 per plate, approximately $185 in 2017 dollars. All the rest were issued at $40 each. Multi-color scene on a cream-colored porcelain plate with gold edge, approximately 10.5 inches in diameter. Limited and Numbered Edition of just 9800 plates each.
