Reunification of
Northern Slesvig with Denmark 1919
This plate
features a young woman standing and waving towards the south, with a windmill
(possibly Dybbol Mill) visible in the distance.
It commemorates the 1919 reunification of South Jylland with Denmark.
The province of Slesvig-Holstein (German:
Schleswig-Holstein) lies on the base of the peninsula of Jutland
(Jylland) between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. Germany controlled
this area after defeating the Danes in 1864. As part of the settlement of
World War I, a plebiscite was held in 1919, and the region was divided
according to the results of the vote, with Northern Slesvig
being ceded to Denmark and the rest of the region remaining part of Germany.
Formal reunification occurred in 1920.
This plate
was issued in two sizes, with the 8" plate being fairly
common (this was a BIG event for Denmark), and the 12.75" plate
being quite rare.
See Royal
Copenhagen plates #185, #188 and #325 for plates commemorating the same event.
