700th Anniversary,
Battle of Reval 1219-1919
VOLMERSLAGET
(Battle of Valdemar) - King Valdemar II of Denmark fought a great war in
Estonia in the early 13th century. Legend has it that, on June 15, 1219
during the Battle of Reval, a flag fell from heaven, at which point the tide of
battle changed and the Danes were victorious. The flag -- a red field
with a white cross -- was adopted as the Danish national flag, and is known as
the Dannebrog. Although there is no historical evidence to support the
legend of the flag falling from heaven in 1219, there is undisputed evidence of
the Dannebrog as the Danish national flag as early as the 14th century, and it
is the oldest state flag still in use today. See Royal Copenhagen plates
#183 and #323.
