Bing & Grøndahl CM31
Niels Ryberg Finsen, Nobel Prize Winner
Memory Plate for Niels Ryberg Finsen, the Danish physician who won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his method of treating disease with ultraviolet light. He established an institute of light therapy in Copenhagen, and wrote several books on his work. The design for this plate incorporates the sun (the ultimate source of light), a stylized laurel wreath, and a stylized caduceus -- the staff entwined with snakes that is the symbol of physicians.
