Bing & Grøndahl CM12

Paris Coat of Arms 1900

Issued for the Paris World's Fair in 1900 (Exposition Universelle).  More than 50 million people attended the exhibition, a world record at the time. The fair included more than 76,000 exhibitors and covered 1.12 square kilometers of Paris.  it was where the escalator debuted, and where Campbell's Soup was awarded the gold medal (an image of which still appears on its label). The 1900 Olympic Games were held simultaneously in Paris.

The plate (plaque) is perhaps the most impressive commemorative item issued by B&G.  It is fairly large (over 10 inches high), very three-dimensional, the shield resting on a reticulated background and surrounded by a banner bearing the motto of the City of Paris: FLUCTUAT NEC MERGITUR ("tossed by the waves, she does not sink").

For the same Exposition, B&G issued two matching shell dishes, with the inscriptions worked into the ruffling on the edge of the shell.  One read s"Exposition Universale Paris 1900" (I do not currently have this one in stock) and the other read s"Bing & Grondahl Porcelain".

The "Bing & Grondahl Porcelain" shell dish was later reissued (more than one time?) and was often used by dealers as a wall-hanging trade sign.  It is not easy to tell the originals form the reissues unless the plate has the B&G stylized towers trademark on the back, first used in 1970.  The design is stunning, no matter when it was issued.
