Tom Thumb got into all sorts of mischief. One day, he was playing in the water, and was swallowed whole by a large fish. That same day, the fish was caught, cooked very lightly (fortunately for Tom), and served to King Arthr for his dinner. When the fish was cut open, out popped Tom.
