Stoneware figurine of a standing woman wearing a sarong and balancing a bowl on her head, designed by Johannes Hedegaard for Royal Copenhagen. This very substantial figurine is 22 inches (56 cm) high, and weighs over 7 pounds (3.3 kg). It was produced in a limited edition of just twenty-five figurines, each one hand painted, numbered, and hand signed by the artist himself. Marked with Royal Copenhagen's three-wavy-line trademark; the artist's full signature; the piece number and edition size (7/25); and a hand-incised figurine number 21347. First quality, but there has been a small repair where the bowl is attached to the top of the head (see detail below). I did not see this when I bought it, since the repair is not visible when the figurine is in the usual standing position; amn a professional restorer could certainly do a better repair. Priced as is at $575.00
Johannes Hedegaard worked for Royal Copenhagen from 1948 to 1966, designing figurines that were produced in stoneware, porcelain, and faience. Most of his subjects were women, and he liked to employ the darker and rough-textured stoneware to represent skin color and tone. Although most of his smaller figurines were issued as regular production figurines, many of his larger stoneware figurines (including this one) were produced in very limited editions. Each piece was created by hand, painted and signed by hand. Because of their size, they would have been very expensive when new (the equivalent of several thousand dollars today). This hand-crafted production technique and high price, combined with Hedegaard's very personal style, limited the number of pieces that could easily be produced and sold. Over the years, Hedegaard produced a great number of different figurines, so his total output was substantial even though many individual figurines are quite scarce.
I purchased this figurine as half of a "pair". I have an identical figurine (marked 5/25 in this series), but one finger has been broken and needs restoration (broken piece included). The one with the broken finger is available at $475.00 (allowing $100 for the cost of restoration), or $850 for the "pair".
