Stoneware figurine of a reclining woman wearing a sarong and holding a bird, designed by Johannes Hedegaard for Royal Copenhagen. This very substantial figurine is 22 inches (56 cm) long, 10 inches (25 cm) high, and weighs 11.5 pounds (5.2 kg). It was produced in a limited edition of just ten figurines, each one hand painted and hand signed by the artist himself. First quality, mint condition. Price: $950.00
Johannes Hedegaard worked for Royal Copenhagen from 1948 to 1966, designing figurines that were produced in stoneware, porcelain, and faience. Most of his subjects were women, and he liked to employ the darker and rough-textured stoneware to represent skin color and tone. Although most of his smaller figurines were issued as regular production figurines, many of his larger stoneware figurines (including this one) were produced in very limited quantities. Each piece was created by hand, painted and signed by hand. Because of their size, they would have been very expensive when new (the equivalent of several thousand dollars today). This hand-crafted production technique and high price, combined with Hedegaard's very personal style, limited the number of pieces that could easily be produced and sold. Over the years, Hedegaard produced a great number of different figurines, so his total output was substantial even though many individual figurines are quite scarce.
