Bing & Grondahl Town Plates
Produced by B&G in 1894 and 1895, 9.5 inches in diameter, hand-painted, signed with the artist's mongram. The series was conceived and initiated by Effie Hegerman-Lindencrone, who went on to become one of B&G's most famous and respected artists. Many of the plates bear Effie Hegerman-Lindencrone's monogram on the back, and, for many collectors, the monogram alone is worth the price of the plate -- her later vases sell for thousands of dollars, often tens of thousands. Other plates are signed by J. Plockross Irminger, who later went on to design many of B&G's best loved figurines, including their best selling figurine of all time, Reading Children #1567.
The totall number of plates produced is unknown, as is the number of different designs that were produced. This is the largest and most complete listing of such plates that I have ever seen, but I know that there are at least a few more designs than are shown here. Some of these are listed in the book Christmas Plates and Other Commemoratives from Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grondahl by Lars Christoffersen, published by Schiffer in 2004. This book lists 62 different town plates (although several of the listings appear to be duplicates), and pictures 30 (ALL of which are also pictured below), and suggests a 2004 retail value of $300 to $500 per plate.
This complete set has sold, but I have a very few duplicates available at $250 each: Helsingør, Hjørring, Nakskov, Nyborg, Nykjøbing Mors, and Tailors Union.
